Very rare heirloom of 19th Century Iraqi Jewish cultural heritage and Hanukkah tradition.
This Hamsa Hanukkah Menorah is an exuberant work of folk art, illustrated with birds and pomegranates, symbols adapted for centuries by Sephardic Jews living in Iraq.
The menorah is adorned with hands known as Hamsas. The Hamsa translates in both Hebrew and Arab to the word five. Rooted in Kabbalistic numerology beliefs, the Hamsa is a powerful traditional symbol believed to ward off the evil eye, offering protection by God.
It is also cited in the Book of Genesis as it relates to how Joseph’s life was spared, another reference to protection.
The stylized birds, crescent moons stars and pomegranate fruit are typical motifs for Hanukkah lamps and other Jewish ceremonial objects from Islamic countries.
The menorah’s design is representative of the architecture of a mosque like domed temple. This is a traditional theme in other Sephardic Jewish art symbolizing the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.*
The menorah uses traditional slim Hanukkah candles
There are 8 candle holders along the bottom and one candleholder, the Shamash, at the top under the symbolic dome.
A wonderful collectible representing centuries of art and the rich cultural traditions of the Arabic and North African Sephardic Jewish Community.
