Sculptural Scandinavian Modern PK20 lounge chair designed by Poul Kjærholm. This early PK20 lounge chair features a high-back scoop seat with perfectly patinated channeled leather upholstery and an adjustable headrest. The base is made from matte chromed profiled steel, Kjærholm’s material of choice. In his own words, “Steel’s constructive potential is not the only thing that interests me; the refraction of light on its surface is an important part of my artistic work. I consider steel a material with the same artistic merit as wood and leather.” Produced in Denmark, circa 1960s.
Paul Kjærholm started his career as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice before making his extensive range of furniture. He attracted international acclaim for his contributions to the ‘Formes Scandinaves’ exhibition in Paris and received the legendary ‘Lunning Award’, the same year for his PK22 chair. In both 1957 and 1960 he won the Grand Prize at the Milan Triennale. Kjærholm is easily distinguished by his minimal yet playful design sensibility.
