This very early pre-production still has the brazed/welded base, differs slightly in dimensions and other production details.
This version was only produced in a very small edition by E Kold Christensen(most likely around 50-100 maximum in 1956-1957).
During this test phase it turned out that these chairs were very difficult to transport, so the later PK22 bases were no longer welded but screwed in place with the typical black screws visible under the legs, characteristic of this design.
The dimensions of the PK22 were also slightly changed: the frame was shortened slightly at the front (to make it less likely to break) and the sheet steel was rolled and brushed slightly differently before chrome plating.
This very early model PK21 is, as it were, a pre-series and is very rarely encountered. The leather is original and has a beautiful patina. Its dry and beatifull but very fragile.
The frame is structurally strong and shows a bit rust on some spots. All left full original unpolished.
This chair is intended more as a collector’s item given its fragility and is no longer suitable for real sitting. She belongs in a museum or private collection of the true enthusiast.
Until a few years ago, this pre-production version was unknown to Fritz Hansen… a version without screws at the bottom was unknown to them… However, after a long search it turned out that it was indeed the first pre-series of which there were only a handful.. .
The buyer will receive an email from Thomas Kjaerholm – son of Poul Kjaerholm – confirming the above.
This model was used in the very first photoshoots for the PK22, but was only actually produced for a very short time.
beautiful vintage condition with patina and signs of wear… see pics.
