The “Tongue” lounge chair, part of the 1st edition by Pierre Paulin and produced in the 1960s by Artifort in the Netherlands, stands out for its unique features. This design icon, recently showcased at the Galerie Perrotin among Paulin’s famous works, resembles a cushion more than a traditional seat. Its undulating form allows the sitter to recline, with minimal separation from the floor due to its foam padding. The chair’s soft, streamlined shape evokes a modernist sculpture, with its revolutionary structure lacking traditional legs. Using an innovative technique, Paulin wrapped the metal frame with foam rubber and stretchy fabric, creating a chair that appears as a single, uniform form rather than an assembly of parts.
